Blergh, sick...

Teeny, weeny daily sketch. Lately hooked on Puzzles and Dragons, but jeez....the monsters all look so high maintenance. Prepping for battle must include at least an hour of hair care and makeup..*cough*Shiva.

I have to say...Blogspot's compression of images you upload really mess with their color. Fortunately, I avoid it like the plague and it doesn't matter! Ha! But really, it's like a third-party Instagram.

Playing around with a series of RPG-themed drawings...starting from Level 1 and moving up sequentially. I got bored and skipped to Level 3: the part where your character realizes it sucks to rough it out in the woods. Especially if you can't afford TV dinners.

Listening to epic mixes on YouTube leads to frantic, poorly-proportioned epic doodles.

And finally, back pain sucks. Don't ever pull your back...even sneezing hurts.

Daily SpitDraw

So...there's the 30-minute "SpitPaint" group on Facebook that posts prompts daily. Except I don't reallly paint (let's call it more of a drawing), so I'll just post my response to these prompts here: my personal Daily SpitDraw's.

Tonight's topic is Back Pain....to which Atlas says, "oops."

It will take some getting used to, posting the occasionally incomplete drawing within the time limit of 30 min. We'll see how long I end up following the rules...

Goalkeeping

Had the rather novel experience of playing in goal this weekend's soccer game, when our regular keeper was unable to make it. Whew, really got to smell those keeper gloves up close and personal!

Totoro

More quick sketches, hope to get them out semi-regularly--I've been slacking on art! And interested in more storytelling, even with the simple doodles...

(This is my long commute to work, with Studio Ghibli music in the background. The most mundane of things suddenly become way more awesome and interesting..!)

Playing Diablo III...

What I imagine my character to be doing every time I "compare" new loot after clearing an area in Diablo III..

Became very interested in Annette Marnat's blog lately, especially her gorgeous silhouettes and lines of actions--a somewhat geometric style and reminiscent of Mary Blair. This one came out of a Moth story I was listening to, in the sketching process was playing with a simpler silhouette, although I got a bit sidetracked playing with brushes along the way. (Part of Marnat's gorgeous style is the absence of line, and focusing on blocks of color, I cheated the form with some pretty broad outlines here...)

A belated Sketch Dailies update, loosely based on the Tengu, a Japanese demon incorporating avian and human elements...the word is rooted in the Chinese "tiangou", or "heavenly dog", so let's toss that into the mix as well...

A couple more sketches before bed, playing with posing and quick gestures.

Been too long since I've really drawn, other than the occasional doodling in meetings...need to keep up this habit! Off to Brazil this weekend for the World Cup, and will hopefully bring back some sketches to show for it as well!!

Friday Night Jams

Drawing to some Ghibli tunes...Totoro is a great, light-hearted and pleasant soundtrack to work to. Princess Mononoke brings on the drama! I'm still a little obsessed with the Mongolian eagle hunters (hunters WITH eagles, not hunters OF eagles!). The people, birds, and horses are all gorgeous...some freaking great photography of this area. Forgot to do more than one WIP shot, as you might be able to tell I tend to layer on sketches until I reach a composition/setup I like then start blocking in.

Quickie

New macbook pro arrived this week in all its thin, sleek, shiny glory! In addition to being shiny, it also runs photoshop WAY fast. It's a complete transformation from the 2-3 second lag I would often get with brushstrokes before. A quick and rough drawing, obviously inspired by the awesome photos going around of the young Mongolian huntress:

For some reason, nothing really beats good old 30-second gesture drawings. And NOTHING beats Pinterest's mobile app for browsing figure drawing reference. For me, it's a seamless way to keep up a good sketching run for an hour or more without having to constantly enter new searches and browse different sites.

Soft Charcoal

Playing with the line quality of soft charcoal. It's soo fun to run it down the page and get everything from a soft, subtle shadow to a sharp, dark line!
